About

KAT - BAKER & OWNER

Katherine

House of Bakes is an independent Wirral bakery run out of my home kitchen in Upton, Wirral. I make celebration cakes, wedding cakes and branded bakes for businesses among other sweets and treats. House of Bakes is registered with Wirral Council, holds public liability insurance, and is rated 5* by the Food Standards Agency.

It wouldn't be fair to say that House of Bakes is just me. I don't have a production line or a big unit, but I do have an incredibly supportive family and partner who have trained up and are always ready to step in when a little help is needed.

I started baking from a super young age with my mum and my grandparents. Whenever we had an opportunity we'd be baking, whether it was pancakes, crumbles, or sandwich cakes, I even remember convincing a babysitter into letting me and my sister make fudge when we were about 8 & 9!! It's always been a hobby of mine, and my sister's, and throughout my early career, it never left my side.

I went to uni and got a degree in Computer Science, a Master's degree in Cyber Security, and then worked as a consultant for 5 years. I made cakes for fun alongside my job as a consultant, and I realised I wanted to be doing this all day every day. I set up House of Bakes in 2022 and ran it as a side-hustle for 4 years until I left my corporate job and made baking my day-job in June 2026.

I'm truly obsessed with my brown butter honeycomb cookies, to date, I think they're the best things I've ever made. But give me a bit of creative freedom with fondant, and I'll disappear into my own little world and produce the most amazing edible art, and that's what I love doing best.

The last thing to know about me, I'd rather turn an order down than take one I can't do justice. If your date is full or your idea isn't something I make well, I'll say so and point you to someone who does.

FAQs

ORDER AND LEAD TIME

How do I order?
For custom orders, such as bespoke cakes, sugar cookies, weddings or corporate orders, send us an enquiry and we'll quote.

How much notice do you need?

  • Bespoke orders: 2+ weeks for most orders. The more notice, the better

  • Corporate orders: 2+ weeks, but availability can't be guaranteed, so please get in touch early

  • Weddings: we take bookings up to 18 months ahead

How do I know if you're free on my date?
We ask you to include your date in the enquiry and we'll confirm availability before sending a quote. Dates are booked pending payment of a non-refundable booking fee.

What do I need to include in a bespoke enquiry?
Your date, the type of event, the number of portions, your delivery address (if needed), a description of what you'd like, and your budget. Giving us a budget means we can quote accurately and avoid wasted back-and-forth.

How quickly will you reply?
Within 48 hours, by website form or email. We don't monitor social media messages, so please use the form or our email.

What happens after I order?
You'll get a confirmation email with your collection or delivery date, time and details. We'll send reminders 1 week before, a couple of days before, and on the morning of collection.

Can I change my order?

  • Custom orders can be changed up to 1 month before the date.

  • Weddings can be changed until your first payment or 3 months before, whichever comes first.

  • Corporate & wholesale orders can't be changed once confirmed.

PRICING & PAYMENTS

How much do your cakes cost?
Prices vary depending on the type of bake, the size, flavours and decorations. Starting prices are listed on each item we offer.

What makes the price go up?
Tiers, size, flavours, finishes and decorations.

What are your wedding cake prices?
Wedding prices include samples, consultation and design, sketches and we'll liaise with your venue. Every wedding cake is bespoke, so there's no standard price. Our minimum spend for weddings is £200 and we require a £100 booking fee to secure your wedding date.

Do you offer volume discounts for businesses?
Prices vary by item. Get in touch with your quantities and we'll quote.

How can I pay?
By card or bank transfer. We don't accept PayPal. Cash is only taken at our pop-up events.

When do I pay?

  • Custom orders: for orders under £100, payment is required in full up front, otherwise a booking fee (typically 30%) secures your order. The balance is due 7 days before collection or delivery.

  • Weddings: £100 to secure your date, then 30% and 70% in two instalments. The final payment is due 4 weeks before the wedding.

  • Corporate orders: invoiced as a single payment with 30 days to pay.

Is the booking fee refundable?
No. By the time you book, we've already put work into your order, and the fee covers our time and materials. It's non-refundable whatever happens.

What if I need to cancel or move my date?
We understand life happens. Because ingredients and materials are bought once an order is placed, cancellations and date changes are handled case by case. Date changes are possible if we have availability. In exceptional circumstances we'll do what we can to be fair.
