The Giant Cupcake is back - and it makes a beautiful wedding cake

Let's talk about the giant cupcake.
If you were baking, or eating cake, in the early 2010s, you'll remember it. The oversized cupcake mould was everywhere. It featured on the Great British Bake Off. Giant cupcakes became popular purchases, home bakers were obsessed, and it became one of those bakes that defined an era. For a few years, it felt like no celebration table was complete without one.
And then, as trends do, it faded. Macarons arrived. Then drip cakes. Then geode cakes. Then mirror glaze. The giant cupcake got quietly retired to the back of the cupboard, and most of us moved on.
So when we received a request for a giant cupcake as part of a wedding order, we'll be honest, our first thought was: really?
Our second thought was: Yes! let's do it.
Here's the Thing About Trends
There's a difference between something being trendy and something being good. The giant cupcake was trendy in 2012 but it was also, at its core, a genuinely fun and impressive cake. A statement piece. Something people gather around and actually get excited about.
When the couple came to us with their brief, it wasn't about nostalgia. It was about wanting something a bit different, something with personality, that still felt elegant for a wedding. And the more we thought about it, the more we realised, done properly, with the right colours, the right finish, the right execution… a giant cupcake could absolutely hold its own at a wedding reception in 2025.
So that's what we set out to do.
The Order
The colour theme was ivory and navy, classic, timeless, and a really satisfying palette to work with. Here's how the giant cupcake came together:
The base was encased in an off-white candy melt shell, smooth, clean, and giving that elegant ivory tone the couple were after. Inside, a vanilla sponge, a proper one, the kind that actually tastes as good as it looks. And on top, a generous, beautifully piped deep navy buttercream, which gave the whole thing that dramatic, sophisticated contrast against the ivory shell.
The result? Honestly stunning. The kind of cake that sits on a table and draws people in.

Plus 48 Matching Cupcakes
No wedding order is complete without a tower, and this one was no exception. Alongside the giant cupcake, we made 48 matching cupcakes across three different flavours, all decorated in the same ivory and navy palette.
Each flavour had its own distinct decoration style, so guests could tell at a glance which was which. No squinting at labels, no guessing…just a beautiful, cohesive display that also made practical sense.
Three flavours. Forty-eight cupcakes. One very happy wedding table.
You Can Order One Too
The giant cupcake is now available to order directly from our cake catalogue, and one of the things we're genuinely proud of with this product is the turnaround time. We can have one ready for you with as little as 5 days' notice, which makes it perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or any occasion that comes together a little last minute.
Colours, and finishes can all be tailored to your event, whether you're going full wedding-elegant or something a bit more fun and bold.
The Lesson Here
Not every trend deserves a comeback. But some things were popular for a reason, and the giant cupcake, done well, is one of them. It's joyful, it's impressive, it's a talking point, and when it's finished to a high standard with a considered colour palette, it genuinely holds its own alongside any modern celebration cake.
We're glad this couple asked. And we're glad we said yes.
